Niña Frida

Karlik Dance Theatre – Javier Leoni Productions

It was clear that we wanted to make a show about Frida Kahlo, but how can we talk about such a woman in just one hour's time and, moreover, for children?

The key came to us from a book, a wonderful book called "Frida", illustrated by Ana Juan. The beauty of illustrations and the simplicity of text led us to the conclusion that one can speak with simplicity of a so complex life.

From Frida what has overall caught our attention was her way of overcoming the obstacles she faced as disease and setbacks. We understood that, above anything else in the show, should prevail our protagonist determination of overcoming pain and her life desire. Her way of transforming pain in color, is a model for anyone who seek to penetrate more deeply her life, or at least, is not indifferent.

Living closely with Frida-girl, teen Frida and adult-Frida throughout the creation process, has been a truly magical journey, where we have shared moments of life of a woman who has left us something very intimate, her diary and work.

Frida Kahlo. Some notes on Frida adult

Frida was a very beautiful women. Even more than beautiful: she was wonderful. She was so full of determination, courage and desire to live, that two years after the accident, after an ordeal of operations, stretching and corsets, she led an almost normal life.

Dressing for her had become one more artistic expression: making her up in front of a mirror or painting one of her self-portraits shouldn't make much difference. Both activities are built upon herself, that was absolutely necessary to her race against decadence.
